Bailey Dance Foundation is our family foundation that provides a dance tuition help for children from Low income families in Oliver & surrounding areas who suffer from emotional distress (social anxiety, depression, bullying, self-esteem, etc.)
In 2012 my son Sam was hit by an SUV while crossing the road to board a school bus. Sam was only 9 years old. His young life changed forever.
Bright, happy, athletic, dare devil always on the go little boy was suddenly scared, anxious little boy on crutches that was not allowed any brain stimulation (no school) or physical activities. Most of his days he spent in pain and scared to leave the house.
One year later still dealing with many physical issues he was diagnosed with PTSD and ADHD due to his brain injury. He was not allowed to play hockey, soccer, baseball, ski. He turned to food and video games. Started gaining weight, bullying started and so did the low self-esteem.
He was only 11 years old. Spending lot of time in physio, counselling and catching up on school work which was a huge struggle. He went from being straight A student to hardly passing in elementary school.
I was lost. I didn't know how to help my child. My best friend suggested Hip Hop classes in our town's new dance studio.
I signed him up. Unfortunately, I was out of town for his first class. My best friend took him. I got a phone call. Sam was standing on top of the staircase of the studio crying and refusing to go downstairs. As hard as it was I played the "tough love" mom. He went.
He was hooked after the first class. He fell in love with dance. He was accepted into his new "dance" family. He was shown love, respect and support by his dance teacher.
I believe that DANCE saved my son's life. Dance took away all his pain & his insecurities. Dance gave him freedom, sense of belonging, purpose.
Today, Sam is 18 years old .... he's a competition dancer, he's a choreographer, he's a dance teacher, he's an inspiration.
Few years ago I realized how blessed and fortunate we are to be able to provide all the dance classes for our son to help him to find a new purpose and passion.
There are many families whose children struggle with same or similar issues like my son did and still does. Many of these families can't afford to pay for dance classes and that's where Bailey Dance Foundation can help.
This is our way to serve with an open heart and give back
Your support and contributions will enable us to help more children to heal through the power of dance.
